Oaklands

The Capital of Country Hospitality

In the heart of cropping country, the small township of Oaklands is an absolute gem for the agricultural buff and anyone who is after the best country hospitality in the region.

Come spring, the entire town lifts with the brightest of yellow paddocks filled with canola as far as the eye can see. The town is a-buzz all year (it’s not just the bees in the canola crop), whether it’s during the football season where attending every home game is a given – rain, hail or shine – or during the late-spring harvest where you’re guaranteed to run into every farmer in the area.

Enjoy or a meal or two at the local pub or club, where the locals will happily share all the tips and tricks for seeing the best bits of the area. They’ll tell stories too – some might even be true, but all will be good natured, revealing their down-to-earth humour and generosity. The honest, hearty meals on offer at both venues are sure to leave you fully satisfied.

Camping and Highlights

Oaklands is a popular spot for RV drivers and caravanners, with five well-equipped RV parking bays in town. Take advantage of the facilities including the barbecue and a dump point, and spend the night in the comfort of your own RV or caravan as you get set to explore the wonders North of the Murray in the morning.

When passing through Oaklands, take time out to stop at the surprising Vintage Machinery Museum. Discover the old tractors, harvesters and other machinery from days gone by. Don't miss the opportunity to photograph the Oaklands Orchid, which you'll find in the centre of town. Learn about the great work being undertaken by the Oaklands community and the Department of Environment to promote the continued survival of this highly endangered but beautiful native flower.

Schedule a pit-stop at Oaklands for a glimpse of real small-town life; you’ll see why the locals love it so much and why visitors keep coming back.
